FastTEST 2.0 is a program that runs on a single PC. If you need a web-based system that is accessible from anywhere, please consider FastTEST Web, a comprehensive internet-based system for item banking, test assembly, online or paper test delivery, results management, statistical analysis, and reporting. It is designed for professionals in psychometrics and the testing industry.
Visit our www.fasttestweb.com for more information.
The FastTEST Professional Testing System is a complete testing environment that allows you to:
- build a bank of items/questions
- create tests, questionnaires and surveys;
- deliver them via computer or paper and pencil;
FastTEST Pro is designed to meet the needs of organizations that need to administer secure computerized tests in one or more specific locations, such as universities, school districts, and governmental agencies. Tests can be administered on one computer, a number of computers (networked or independent), or even from a USB flash drive.
Tests can be constructed with several approaches, including:
- Conventional tests—fixed form or randomized
- Computerized adaptive tests (CAT) based on item response theory (IRT)
- Branched tests using correct/incorrect or option branching
FastTEST Pro 2.3 is based on the powerful item banking capabilities of the FastTEST 2.0 Test Development System, and includes options for utilizing:
- Conventional multiple-choice items
- True-false items
- Rating scale items
- Testlets (such as a reading passage with five questions)
- Multiple audios, videos, graphics, and pop-ups
- Multi-windowed screens
- Screen “hotspots.”
With its capability of delivering computerized adaptive tests (CATs) based on item response theory, combined with a host of other advanced features, FastTEST Pro 2.3 is the most sophisticated Windows-based testing system available. It has nearly 30 years of development behind it, dating back to the DOS-based MICROCAT testing system.
| New Features in Version 2.3 |
- Data logging: When building a test session for delivery, there is now an option to have examinee response data immediately logged to a text file, one line per examinee.
- Item timing: FastTEST Pro now allows you to implement a maximum time for each item.
- Score free-response items: FastTEST Pro now allows you to immediately score free-response items by assigning score values (e.g., 1) to a list of responses that you create. Item scores can be different for each correct answer that you specify.
- Special items report: The Special Items Report is designed for a proctor to view an examinee’s responses to selected responses to selected items in a test following its completion.
- Score conversion module: The Score Conversion Module allows you to take any score from any module prior to it in a Test Session and convert via percentiles, classifications, or a linear transformation. The converted scores can then be used in Custom Reports.
- Data extraction from Master Data Files: FastTEST Pro can aggregate your data files from a session into a Master Data File for any number of testing stations and prepare the data that you select for analysis.
- Module timing: Timing can now be implemented on specific modules in a test session and turned off for other modules.
- Continuous item numbering: If a test session contains more than one module with items, the numbering sequence displayed to candidates can now be linked to be continuous.
- Test Administration Options:In addition to selecting a Test Session for each examinee, you can now administer tests in Session Mode and Continuous Mode.

The complete FastTEST Pro system (Version 2.3) consists of these packages:
|
The Test Development Package includes the four main components that comprise the main FastTEST Pro installation and work in combination to help you create a wide range of electronic tests (E-Tests).
- Item Banker - The powerful FastTEST item banker is hierarchically structured to allow you to construct banks to reflect the blueprints of your curriculum or testing domains. Please see FastTEST 2.0 for more information on FastTEST Pro's extensive item banking capabilities.
- The structure can be up to 12 levels deep, and items can be created at any level of the structure.
- For each item there are
- options for scoring and branching
- searchable fields for keywords and item statistics (conventional and IRT)
- other fields for useful item information, such as Angoff ratings
- E-test items can accept examinee responses using highlighted fields, checkboxes or radio buttons, or free-response text boxes. All examinee response options can be placed anywhere on the screen, allowing complete flexibility. Or answers can be accepted in a Response Panel at the bottom of the item screen.
- Test Assembly -
This component provides several efficient ways for you to select the items in your test. Once you have selected your items, they are easily re-ordered (or automatically scrambled) to create your final test. With electronic testing, you can also present each examinee with a unique, randomly scrambled test.
- Search by various combinations of item statistics and keywords
- Browse to add single items or entire subfolders
- Randomly select from any part of the bank
- Examine the test information function as the test is assembled

|
|
- E-Test Session Creation: FastTEST Pro is designed to make sophisticated test design simple and accessible. Tests are easily assembled for delivery as a “test session” that includes different Session Modules for instructions, test questions, reviewing, score reports, and score conversions.
- Instruction Modules are used to introduce examinees to Test, Review and Report modules. Like Test Modules, they can include branching, audios, and videos, as well as popups.
- Test Modules
|
Test Modules deliver and score tests, questionnaires, and surveys. You can have as many Test Modules as you like in a Test Session, each with its own scores. Each test can have its own time limit and each can be a different kind of test – conventional, random, branched, or adaptive. Conventional tests can be fixed-form, randomized, or branching. Adaptive test (CATs) can be configured in a number of ways, including fixed-length tests, mastery/classification tests, or variable-length tests designed to measure all examinees to the same level of precision.
|
|
- Review Modules (optional). They allow your examinees to review and change any test they completed earlier in a Test Session. Each Review Module can have its own time limit and can compute new scores that you select.
- Report Modules (optional). Reports can be (1) displayed on-screen to the examinee and/or the proctor, (2) printed, or (3) saved to a file. Types of reports available:
- Complete Item-by-Item Report – This detailed report lists the item identifiers, item response, and item score for each item in a test. For an IRT-based CAT, this report also includes a graphical portrayal of the examinee’s progress through the CAT.
- Custom Report – FastTEST Pro allows you to design custom reports to include any combination of scores from any Test or Review Module presented before it in a Test Session.
- Special Items Report – This report allows a proctor to view an examinee’s responses to selected responses to selected items in a test following its completion.
- Score Conversion Modules -
The score conversion module allows you to convert raw scores to scaled scores within a test session.
- Test Administration - This component securely delivers your E-test sessions.
- A "menu" of tests can be available from which a proctor selects the appropriate
test for each examinee. You can also you can have the examinee select the appropriate Test Session, or you set up a Test Session on a given testing station to run continuously for a series of examinees.
- Other than entering their name or I.D. number, no keyboarding is
required of the examinee – all examinee responses use the mouse (unless, of
course, you are collecting open-ended or constructed responses).
- Optional on-screen reports of test results are available at any point in
a Test Session for the examinee and/or the proctor
- Tests can be interrupted by the proctor to suspend, restart, or terminate the test.
- The administration module creates a detailed data file for each test given to each examinee,
which provides extensive data for research and/or applied purposes.
Additional Utilities - In addition to these four main components, a number
of Utilities are available to:
- Compact item banks
- Import item text from word processing files
- Import items and tests from earlier versions of both FastTEST and FastTEST Pro
- Move banks and tests from one workspace to another
- Extract item and test-level data from examinee data files and prepare it for
analysis by Xcalibre or other statistical software.
- Import item statistical data into the item bank for later use in test assembly.

Using FastTEST Pro for CAT
If you are planning to use FastTEST Pro for CAT, you should consider our companion program CATSim. CATSim implements post-hoc simulations that are essential for validity and reliability when designing CATs, by allowing you to pretest various combinations of CAT parameters. This is an important step prior to the release of an operational CAT to determine that your live CAT will be both effective and efficient. For further information and resources on CAT, please visit CAT Central and www.iacat.org.
