Extracting data from an Excel spreadsheet

You can get data from a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet into ITEMAN, RASCAL, XCALIBRE, or ASCAL format by saving the spreadsheet as a text (tab delimited) file, then opening it in a word processor (such as Microsoft Word) and replacing the tab characters (^t) with nothing. Before doing this, however, make sure there are no blank responses (replace them with the "omit" or "not reached" code), otherwise any examinees who skipped questions will be scored incorrectly. Make sure to add the four lines of control data, and save the final data file in text-only (ASCII) format.
